Capturing Fun: A Joyful Winter’s Morning in Niddrie.
On a mild winter's morning in the lovely suburb of Niddrie, I had the pleasure of photographing a family whose love and connection shone through every frame. The session was a special birthday gift for mum, a chance to capture the joy and playfulness of her family—despite dad's initial reluctance. But as soon as we started, it was clear that this would be a photoshoot to remember.
The day began with the kids excitedly showing me their backyard, but we soon decided that the front yard would be a better backdrop for our session. We kicked off with some posed family photos at the front door, capturing the classic moments that every family cherishes. But the real fun began when we turned up the music and let loose!
With my speaker in tow and a playlist of the kids' favourite songs, we danced to the “Spidey and His Amazing Friends” theme song and belted out "Let It Go" from Frozen. The energy was infectious as we played games like musical statues and "the floor is lava", where the kids giggled and jumped with delight.
One of the highlights was when I pulled out my secret weapon: bright green balloon swords! Although they kept popping (much to the kids' amusement), the laughter that filled the air made it all worthwhile. We blew bubbles, ran around, and enjoyed every minute of this playful morning.
The kids decided it was time to show off their Carlton pride. Being huge supporters, they eagerly popped on their jerseys, with the son even pulling out his favorite hat for a few special shots. Their excitement was contagious, and it made these moments even more memorable.
As a photographer, it's moments like these that make my job so rewarding. The connections between this family were so genuine, so full of warmth and love, that I found it hard to put my camera away. One of my favorite memories from the day was when dad, hand in hand with his daughter, took a slow walk down the street. I couldn’t resist sneaking a few final shots, capturing the tenderness of their steps.
Turning around, I caught mum sharing a moment of pure joy with her son—kissing, cuddling, and laughing together. The love in this family was palpable, and it made saying goodbye incredibly hard. I left with a full heart, knowing I had captured something truly special.
